One looks closely at what prolonged carrying does to people. The other looks at what leaders and organizations can do differently.

The Long Chew

Individual Tools for Burnout Recognition, Relief, and Recovery

What happens when capable people become the place where unfinished work, invisible work, and organizational strain keep landing?

Read an excerpt: on what comes before a decision

From the working manuscript, “From the Founder.” Publication forthcoming.

I have spent much of my career building systems, clarifying responsibility, stewarding resources, and helping people carry work that mattered. Over time, I learned that authority may be assigned, but stewardship must be entrusted. Strategy begins after sight. What we notice shapes what we name. What we name shapes what we choose.

This book begins before the meeting, before the decision, before the framework. It begins where judgment takes shape. It asks you to slow the rush toward certainty, hold Personhood, Power, and Context together, and let reality retain the authority to revise you.

We Set the Table

Organizational Tools for Burnout Repair, Prevention, and Thriving

Burnout is not only an individual experience. Leadership choices, workload, authority, expectations, operating practices, and organizational conditions shape what people are being asked to carry.

Read an excerpt: on the responsibility of holding authority

From the working manuscript, “From the Founder.” Publication forthcoming.

I have been harmed by conditions I did not control, and I have held enough authority to change conditions for other people. Both are true. In my teams, I have tried to build places that welcome and honor people, develop their talent, and leave room for whole lives beyond work. I did not always get it right. My job was larger than getting good work out of people.

Creating conditions that help people flourish serves people first and organizations as well. When people flourish, their work often does too. That benefit is not the reason people deserve care, dignity, or room to live. Treating people as tools may produce a short-term gain. It is still a bad operating strategy.

Choose the perspective you need.

The Long Chew starts with the individual experience of carrying too much. We Set the Table turns toward the decisions and conditions leaders can change.

Both books are coming soon. You can explore burnout workshops and support through Power in Practice now.
